While I’ve been educating my readers on acids in recent weeks, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Understanding acids and their uses is one thing, but knowing how to apply them in the correct formula is a whole different story. Unfortunately, at-home acid products will never be as effective as a professional treatment, and I’m going to explain why.
The current trend of products that are readily available on the high street are acids and retinoids labelled as “professional-strength” so of course, consumers automatically think they’re getting a professional-grade treatment. This isn’t the case.
Frankly, these false claims are insulting to skincare specialists like me who have spent many years learning all about acids and how to use them most effectively.
For example, clinical-grade peels can only be purchased by qualified and licensed aestheticians and clinics, therefore, there is no way you’re buying the same type of product online. Simply put, medical-grade products are not safe in the hands of untrained consumers.
Brands that are labelling their acids and similar products as medical-grade, professional or even a ‘facial in a box’ are not replicating a clinic treatment. It’s impossible. If you have a dilemma that you want to treat to a professional and medical standard, you must come to the clinic.
To truly understand acids, you must have a grasp of basic chemistry and the science behind skincare. I’ve noticed many brands bragging about the percentage of ingredients in their formulas. Often, there is no need for the high percentage levels of the ingredients they’re selling.
Instead, we need to strip it back to basics. As brands are offering single-ingredient formulas, consumers are buying multiple products without any professional guidance, and this is a big no-no. Stronger doesn’t necessarily mean better; the formula is what matters.
I’m not saying that you should avoid using acids all together, but you must understand them. Applying acids correctly can often be a complicated process, so you should consult a professional. Rather than purchasing acids that you THINK your skin needs, it’s better to get it right the first time around.
Only medical professionals or advanced skincare therapists can carry out my Glow Before You Go treatment.
Glow Before You Go is a light, brightening resurfacing solution that improves the signs of ageing, hyperpigmentation and textural problems with minimal downtime.
I will tailor a treatment specifically to you, combining lactic acid, salicylic acid, resorcinol and retinol to create a formula that truly works. The treatment is effective in minimising the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation issues like age spots, discolouration and uneven skin tone. Glow Before You Go is a powerful treatment, which exfoliates dead skin cells and stimulates cell renewal.
